I disagree. The Lord hardens hearts (a la Pharaoh) of the world to different degrees and at varying times. The church's closeness to Christ does not itself cause resistance.
Perhaps there's scripture to back up using persecution as a barometer, but I feel it's a bit of a shortcut.
You can have a church that is 99.99% Christ-like and the community will not necessarilly increase persecution or increase their hatred or persecution. To me, that logic gives a bit too much credit to the works of man. Persecution isn't a barometer of the church's walk with Christ. Lukewarmness, yes. Presence (or lack) of persecution, not necessarilly.
The Lord is who calls believers to Himself, and the Lord is who allows persecution, et alia. Again, maybe there's scripture (besides that hatred of the Word will inevitably increase) to back up a correlation of closeness=persecution, but for now, it just strikes me the wrong way.
