Posts: 151 (03/11/07 12:30:45) Frequent User Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Recently I took a drive from my home in Tacoma to Portland with my Pastor, who was a very dear friend of Francis Schaeffer and whose father started Covenant Seminary (PCA in St. Louis), and a guy who helped start the Christian Action Council (which produced the Crisis Pregnancy Centers). I introduced them to Zions' Harp songs. The exchange was electric, and you will be soon be hearing a Presbyterian church singing Zion's Harp songs. I find it perplexing that many AC churches would be abandoning some of the greatest Christian songs ever, as found in the Zion's Harp, for much of the trite music now popular in the church. True, there are occasional songs in the ZH that have problems with theology, but in most part, you really can't beat the Hymnal that has been identified with AC'dom. StAugustine

However, for the wider discussion, I must say that though some of the 18th and 19th century hymns are still sung in many of the American churches, is it not strange that this music, which has older and deeper roots, has all but disappeared from them? Now the 18th/19th century hymns are disappearing too, as far as I have heard. Repetitive, lyrics-starved, little one-voice ditties are replacing both. What a contrast to ZH songs, some of which have a gazillion verses. Even the tunes are repeated for different lyrics. This tells me that the writers were intent upon SAYING something in those songs rather than merely creating an ambience in which one could tune in to the mystical nature of the universe. Ommmm. MODERATOR ALERT: I once wrote some alternative lyrics for some ZH songs. If this thread languishes, I MIGHT START POSTING SOME OF THEM! Another point, this one a request. I do wish someone of lyrical ability would upgrade the language in all of the ZH songs to the vernacular English, and fix some theology or triteness in some of them. Where are the ACs to do so? In the PCA, perhaps?

Live as thou, when thou must die, wouldest have thy life recorded! When thou drawest thy last breath, Helpless friends are trembling near thee; Far above this world and death, This pure heart will lift and cheer thee; Judgement can no fear dispense, God is thy true confidence! 5. Watch and pray; thy God now fear, Wouldst thou such a heart be reaping! Care thou not, though death be bear! For thy time is in God's keeping. Learn to meet death without fear, Look on death with gladness here! 6. Conquer death believingly! Say: "I know, by faith unshaken, Christ, my Lord whom I shall see, When from dust he shall me waken." He who "It is finished" spake, Did from death it's power take. 7. Oft the grave in spirit view; See thy mortal frame there lying; Say: "Lord teach me this anew, Dust I am on thee relying! Teach me that from day to day I may learn true wisdom's way!" One note regarding "fixing up the ZH" though. The english version of the ZH is missing out some great songs compared to the European ones. The European ones have 104 songs in the addition (Heft). They really should be part of the english one as well. (Although a few are translated and I believe in some ways accessible and known to most AC-churches). tom.

Posts: 0 (03/20/07 17:52:57) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	After studying music, I've tried to figure out just what is going on musically in very traditional ACCA congregations. I think perhaps ZH is being sung in a pre-equal temp. scale. Can anyone clarify that? As for the word "hymn" it does really mean the words not the music. I think Amish church music is really interesting. It's older yet and seems to have roots in Gregorian chant. I stopped at the Mennonite Relief Sale in Bloomington, Illinois, last Friday night. Both ACCA and ACCN also help with it, and you see many friendly faces there of many persuations. It's a wonderful experience for all.

Posts: 151 (03/25/07 12:07:40) Frequent User Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	The PCA, which is a very conservative denomination, has taken out of its hymnal verses found in hymns that mention death and the grave. Our pastor (PCA) will usually print those missing verses in the bulletin and put them back in. When one visits Europe (or Early America), the graveyard fittingly sets in the church yard. Our church organist is currently giving a 7 week sunday school on music in worship, and exploring what is most fitting for sunday. We have members in our congregations that are Psalm-only singers (like the Covenanteers), others that welcome all and anything. We have those that oppose all but a minimum of musical instruments, and others that want a full band. Unlike the Apostolic Church that I grew up in, our pastor chooses and leads all the songs (not waving his hand!), feeling that it is the function of the pastor and nobody else to direct worship. The choir and all musicians set up in the balcony behind, since they are not the object of attention or worship. It is of value for the ACC (and every church) to re-think what worship means, and how God best intends us to worship him. Certainly, part of that is having hymns that are God-centered, theologically rich, and non-repetitive mantras. Poetics in the ZH are awesome. Older hymns which can be found in contemporary hymnals as well as the ZH are usually better translated in the ZH, especially in the ACN ZH. It's true! Compare, for example, #5 Praise thou the Lord the Almighty. The ZH is better. Some dude did a remarkable translation job. St Augustine
