Del;
Completely agree with you. There is an elder in our church, who used to be a minister in the Christian Church movement, now Reformed, and as vibrant of Christian as possible, even on his job. He is a giant black guy, and a deputy sheriff in the most violent precinct of Seattle. Of course, he carries a gun and is not afraid to use it.
It is wanton hypocrisy for a Christian to say that it is important for law enforcement to happen, that law enforcers and military people are God's servants, but that there no role for a Christian to actually participate in these activities. I'm sorry, but this is God's world, and it is important that God's people be involved in all aspects of His world. My friend the elder is acutely aware of the dangers of a police state, and his role as enforcing the law. He is aware that God's law always supercedes man's law, and will never extend his activities in violation of the law of God, even when ordered. We need more brothers like him. I could talk of many other beloved brothers in the military with similar beliefs.
