what's the difference between ACC and Pentecostal? |
Lead | |
|
I am new here (tho I have posted a few things today), and I was just wondering...what is the difference between the Apostolic faith and the Pentecostal faith? I go to a Church of God (which of course is Pentecostal), and I love it there. However they differ in many ways from the United Pentecostal Church (i.e. dresses, hair, etc.). I did not grow up in church, and really don't have a lot of knowledge on very many denominations. I personally believe in women wearing dresses and long hair and prayer veils, but my church does not. I am not going to leave that church because of that; it just isn't an "issue" there.
Anyway, back to the original question. the differences between Apostolic and Pentecostal? Just curious. |

Leslie,
Welcome to the board!! It is nice to have you here. I really cannot tell you what the differences are because I am not that familier with the pentecostal faith. One obvious is that we do not speak in tongues. I am sure that somewhere one the board, this is covered. God Bless, Coffeeplease |

www.apostolicchristian.org/ This is the Statement of Faith for the ACCA. It is not the best reference, but it is really all we have.

Why not? | ||
|
I'm new here and this is my first post. I am not a member of the AC Church but I have considered it. We have a community where I live. I have been very interested in the church since eigth grade. I came to this site to learn more. I guess I would like to know why the AC Church does not speak in tongues as it is in the bible. I believe it is a vital part of a christian's life in Christ. I come from non-denominational church where our church is also based solely on the bible and its teachings except for the dress and hair. We have the same beliefs and doctrine as the AC Church does and also believe in water batism. If you could help me out that would be great. Thanks.

I believe I may have an answer for you.
Different churches interpret "speaking in tongues" differently. The Pentecostal church has a belief that the words are only known to God and sometimes an interpreter. It is looked upon as something that happens frequently usually when a person is "filled with the spirit". The other church believes that when you speak in tongues you are speaking in an actual existing language, one that is native to your listener but not to you. This belief is that God only gives you this gift when you need to communicate his word to someone who does not speak your language and there is no other way of communication. It is approach as an extremely RARE event in history. This is very basic info and not in depth at all, I hope it helps a little. |

the gift of tongues | ||
|
babyangel,
I personally go to a Church of God (which of course is Pentecostal). I thank God for the gift of tongues he has given to believers there, and I myself have prayed in tongues ONCE. It was quite an experience, unlike any other, that brought me to my knees in complete humbleness. Messages given in tongues are interpreted 99% of the time. So yes, I do believe in the gift of tongues, but it is only the LEAST of all desired gifts of the Spirit, that (in my own opinion and belief) one does NOT HAVE to have in order to have other gifts. This is obvious because of the enormous amount of believers out there who obviously have other gifts and yet do not speak in tongues (either because they do not believe in it, or that gift was not imparted to them, or because they know there is no one there with the gift of interpretation). By the way, can a person be imparted with a Spiritual gift that they do not believe in???? That goes with ANY of them. Something to ponder. Now I have only been part of a Pentecostal church for 3 years. There are still things that confuse me. But this is not the board for that, and my original questions for this thread were regarding the difference between Apostolic and Pentecostal. |

Re: the gift of tongues | ||

"AlwaysStriving" -- the UPC believes in BOTH types of speaking of tongues that you have referred to. Not just one as you have implied.
There is the gift of tongues and there is the interpretations of tongues. When one receives the gift of tongues, that is when they are filled with the Holy Ghost. There are also times when one speaks in tongues and someone else interpretes what is being said. The interpretor is also receiving a gift. I have experienced both. That is, I have received the gift of tongues and received the Holy Ghost and I have seen other people interpret. |

Re: denominations in Apostolic faith

Vanessa, there is a conservative Apostolic Church in Peoria, two, actually, one of the Nazarene side and one of the American side. The basic beliefs in both of those churches are of a very conservative nature and sound biblical teaching. I do not have direct info to give you except for the address of the American side.....3420 North Sheridan Road.
If you are looking for Pentecostal, I cannot help you there, sorry. |

Re: denominations in Apostolic faith

I was part of a UPC (United Pentecostal Church) for almost 2 years, although I did not claim to be really Pentecostal. I was from a "Baptist" background and never believed that tongues were necessary for salvation. I still do not believe that they are and think that the UPC has twisted some scriptures into reading that you "must" receive the gift of tongues. I simply do not interpret it that way. The UPC I was a part of had wonderful fellowship and I still miss the people. But, their doctrinal beliefs seemed very much a "works-based" faith. They seemed to fear that salvation would be taken away from them if they didn't act or dress a certain way. However, my leaving had nothing to do with any dress standards (pastor never preached on that anyway). I left over their very narrow belief on what salvation was. In doing research on the Apostolic Christian Church, I'm happy to say that they are in no way related to the UPC in their belief on salvation. I'm just sorry there isn't a church near me to visit.

Re: what's the difference between ACC and Pentecostal?

I do have one question about the ACC that I haven't seen anywhere. I noticed that the word "Nazarean" appears after several of the names of churches on some web sites. In my area, the Nazarene church is totally separate from the ACC. Is there any affiliation or roots between the two? I believe the Nazarene Church is a bit less conservative than the ACC. Any info on this? Thanks.

Re: Difference between ACCN (Nazarean) & Nazarene Denom.
|
There is no connection between the 2 denominations. There is however, AT LEAST one similarity theologically. Both denominations are Arminian in theological position as opposed to Calvinistic. That is to say the Truly Saved can loose their salvation. I would also say you are correct in stating that the Nazarene denomination is somewhat less conservative. Also the 2 churches spell Nazarene/Nazarean differently. By the way James Dobson of Focus on the Family is Nazarene.

Re: what's the difference between ACC and Pentecostal?

Most Pentecostals believe that the tongues (their version of the Holy Ghost) is necessary for salvation. From what I've read about the ACC, this is not their belief. So, other than some dress standards, the two faiths are quite different from each other.

Mitsy,
I was one the other board where you post and one of the "guys" were claiming the we do speak in tongues from his interpetation of our statement of Faith.....We do NOT. We believe that one is filled with the Holy Spirit with the free gift of salvation. He also told you to be careful with us....that we were sneaky....our statement of faith very much so is right on the line, with nothing hidden. Yes, the church is legalistic, but yes, the truth of salvation IS being taught. Coffeeplease |

Re: what's the difference between ACC and Pentecostal?

Thanks Coffee:
Don't worry...I don't believe your group is sneaky. In fact, I have a whole lot more respect for this Christian denomination (as a whole) than some of the others that believe that tongues are part of the "formula" that saves anyone. The conservative way in which you worship is not something that I think is bad. And issues of dress would not be the reason for me leaving a group unless it was harped about from the pulpit. I was a bit surprised to hear that some Apostolic Christian Church women use some makeup. I wear it and don't see anything wrong with it as long as you don't use a lot and don't look "made-up". Another question, do all the women in your church have long hair? Just curious. Thanks. |

OK, so what is the difference between the ACCA and the ACCN? I notice that the word "Nazarean" appears after most of the ACC websites. Are some Nazarean (ACCN) by organization and the rest in the ACCA? Just trying to understand.
